Chris' brother just called to let us know that he is being sent to Iraq tomorrow (he is in the Army). He said he will be there until March 2009. I don't know any more than that. Would you please do us a favor and remember Steve and his family in your prayers (as well as all of the other men and women serving over there)?

First Day of School
Today was the first day of school. At home things went pretty smoothly. The kids were mixed with excitement and nervousness. Chris took the older two to school and Sean and I took the younger two to school this morning.
Chris didn't have too much trouble with the older ones since all he had to do was drop them off at the door. I, on the other hand, had to walk the younger two to their classes and turn in some papers the teachers gave out at the meet the teacher night. It was a total mad house at the school. There wasn't a single parking space. The line to get into the parking lot went way down the street. Once we got in the parking lot we just circled and circled. Finally I just parked in the fire lane. The kids were supposed to be in the classroom at 7:45 and by then it was 7:50! We dropped off Matthew first and turned in the papers. I told Mrs. M that we didn't have a yellow bus form. So she dug around for the form for what felt like forever as I stood there with Matthew by my side, Sean kicking his feet around to make his stroller move and Hannah in the hall waiting for me. (I am not sure why she didn't want to go in the room.) She finally decided she would send the form home with Matthew today. So I give Matthew and hug and kiss and then we raced to the other end of the building to Hannah's classroom. It was now 8:00. When we got to her classroom, Mrs. C whisked Hannah into the classroom and took the papers from me without even looking at them. It was at that point I realized I didn't get to hug her good-bye. I looked at her and waved to her and mouthed "Love ya!". She waved back and had an expression of fear and excitement all rolled together. I can't wait to hear all about their day!
I have already heard from Rebeckah via email. She said she is happy because she found two friends from soccer there. She also said she LOVES computer lab. I am so happy she has found some positives about her new school.

After dropping off the kids we met back up at the house. Chris did some work from home while I packed Sean a lunch and put it in his "Cars" lunch box and then we headed out. We ran a couple of errands and then took Sean to the park. At first he didn't want to be there. He wanted to eat his lunch from his lunch box. (I tried to get a picture of him with his lunch box but he wouldn't work with me.) He didn't want to play on the playscape, but once he spotted the geese by the river he wanted to go "pet" them.
I wish I had had a video camera with me at that moment. He ran towards the geese yelling "Hi duckies!!" They all turned and looked at him and started honking. He stopped dead in his tracks and just stared at them. After the looked at the "ducks" (geese) and ducks we headed to lunch.
We went to Schlotzsky's for lunch. Sean thought he was hot stuff eating from his lunch box. He loved his lunch. When we got home he wanted to pack another lunch!

Well the kids are home and in bed now. They all seemed to enjoy school today. It was chaos when they got home because they all wanted to talk and Chris and I had tons of questions for them too. Here is some of the information we got from them:
Rebeckah: There are 11 not 12 kids in the 7th grade. There are 4 kids (including her) in her math class. She is torn between taking guitar or yearbook for an elective. I am hoping she picks yearbook, but the decision is hers. She signed up for volleyball too. Practices start tomorrow! She is also thinking of running for student council. She just isn't sure what position to run for.
Austin: He came home with homework for ME! I am to write a paper telling his Language Arts teacher about him both as a person and a student. He picked art as his elective. Art, unlike guitar and yearbook, is a one semester elective, so next semester he wants to take computers as his elective. Austin was the one that did not want to go to school this year and he said he had a good time today and thinks he will like school this year.
Hannah: She LOVED today. She made two new friends. She was the only one that came home with homework. HOMEWORK on the FIRST DAY in FOURTH grade!! She was a real trooper too. She had a snack when she got home, talked for a bit and then got right to work on her homework. She had 12 math problems and had to write five sentences about what she did after school today. She also liked riding the bus home and wants to ride it in the mornings too. I wouldn't mind except for the fact they have to be out there at 6:50 in the morning.
Matthew: Matthew had a lot of fun today too. He is already talking about the 100th day of school party. He said he earned 7 stars in music today. I have no idea how you earn a star. He will have to tell me again tomorrow. He said his favorite part of the day was recess. LOL
Well that is all for today. Clothes are picked out, lunches made, kids bathed, homework done, backpacks lined up and kids are tucked in bed! We are ready for the second day of school.

Meet the teacher night
Last night was open house/meet the teacher night at both schools. Chris went with Hannah and Matthew and I went with Rebeckah and Austin. I only thought I was pumped and ready for school to start, but now I am REALLY pumped and ready!
Fist I will tell you what little I know about Hannah and Matthew’s classes and their impressions. Hannah is excited because a girl she went to cheer camp with is in her class and they sit close together. She also has a girl that lives down the street in her class and a boy that is in Matthew’s Cub Scout Pack is also in her class. She can't wait to start. She has already planned out what days she will bring her lunch and which days she wants to buy her lunch based on the calendar they handed out with the lunch menu printed on it.
Matthew is getting a bit more excited about going to school. (He still wants to be homeschooled. For those who don’t know he went to that school for kindergarten, was homeschooled for 1st grade, and now is back at that school. So he knows both sides of the coin.) He has a friend from kindergarten in his class this year, so that helps things out a bit. He also saw his kindergarten teacher and she remembered him and gave him a big hug. She is a great teacher, but the only thing that I don’t like about her is she always brings up the socialization issue when homeschooling is mentioned. When she saw he was returning she said something about it being great that he gets to be around other kids again! PLEASE…..he is around 4 other kids all day every day!! That socialization issue is a huge pet peeve of mine.
As far as Rebeckah and Austin go I am SO excited about this new school!! It is a very small school. In the ENTIRE 6th grade there are 17 students and in the ENTIRE 7th grade there are 12 students!! The same teachers teach 6th through 8th grade, so Rebeckah and Austin will have the same teachers. That will make things easier on me….less teachers to meet and less names to remember.
We first met the science teacher who is also the guitar teacher. Rebeckah and Austin both want to play guitar. The meeting with the science/guitar teacher was pretty uneventful, but they now know who he is, where the class is located and somewhat what to expect the first day.
We then moved on to the language arts teacher. She is also Austin’s homeroom teacher. So it was in there that Austin got to pick out his locker. They don’t assign a locker, the kids pick which one they want from a block of lockers and sign up for it. I asked if we were to provide the locks and they told me most kids don’t even put locks on their lockers! We learned that his teacher has a son that is in 6th grade also and his name is Austin too.
Next we went and met the social studies teacher. When I introduced Rebeckah and Austin she immediately knew their last names and grades. As she was talking to us about her classroom policies and such a group of young boys (6th graders I am guessing) poked their heads in the room and said, “There is the other Austin!” We hadn’t even been there 30 minutes and Austin is already known around the school!
We move to the math teachers room (which is also Rebekcah's homeroom) and wait in line to talk to her. As we were standing there a boy piped up and started talking to Austin. He said; “I know you. You are the other Austin. You are in my class!” At that point the teacher is finishing up with the parents ahead of us (turns out to be that boy’s parents) and the math teacher said; “Since you are “the other Austin”, you must be in 6th grade and this must be your sister Rebeckah who is in the 7th grade.” I was just floored that we were already known by the teacher without introducing ourselves. By the way, I think I am going to love their math teacher (as well as the social studies teacher).
Our last stop was to speak to THE coach. He coaches boys flag football, girls volleyball and boys and girls basketball. We told him Rebeckah is wanting to play volleyball this year and asked some questions. Practice will begin the second day of school.
Here are some more reasons I love this school:
~It is small so there is more one on one time with the teacher.
~They seem to genuinely care about the students.
~Even though it is a public school, we found Scripture quotes on the walls!!
~They want the students challenged.
~Detention doesn’t consist of sitting in a room. It is 30 minutes after school and they have to clean any room or hall that needs cleaning! (Rebeckah hates that!)
Anyway, I think it is going to be a good school year all the way around. Now if I could only say that about Pop Warner. We are still working on that and I don’t want to ruin my good mood with typing out the details right now. When it is all said and done, I will give a final report.

Confusion and frustration
Sean has been on a waffle kick lately and wanting waffles every time I turn around. He has his own special waffles that are, of course, wheat and egg free, but he ran out of them this week. Yesterday he wanted a waffle, so he helped himself to an Eggo waffle!! He even ate it frozen! He only ate a quarter of it before I discovered he was eating it. I quickly took it away from him and wondered if we were going to be as lucky as we were with the donut holes. Well we were! No reaction what so ever!! I am still cautious about it and plan on keeping him off of wheat and eggs until we see the allergist in September. Wouldn't it be nice if this meant the end of his food allergies! Of course he hasn't had any apples to see if he reacts to them.
Yesterday Hannah went to be certified to participate in Pop Warner. They would not certify her because they didn't accept her homeschool report card. Instead, they require homeschoolers to sign a form that states they did not meet the 2.0 GPA requirement. They also require her to turn in a progress report stating she has improved her grades. I refuse to sign that form because she DID meet the requirement. I called the headquarters and talked to a very rude man and asked him how a homeschooler is to show they have improved their grades. He told me that I would just write a note saying she is now passing! I asked why couldn't I just do that from the get-go. He told me because they have no idea if my child really did pass! That just doesn't even make sense to me.
I am really wrestling with what to do next. She has a second chance to be certified on Saturday. My options are: pull her out and be out the money (since she already has her uniform), sign the form as is (I will NOT do that, so it really isn't an option for me), or cross out the parts of the form I don't agree with, state she HAS met the requirements and that she was homeschooled last year and then sign it. I am leaning towards the last option and if they don't accept it then it just wasn't meant to be. I am so proud of Hannah because she is handling it so well. She understands why I will not sign the form and agrees we shouldn't sign our names to something that isn't true. Of course she is sad that she might not get to cheer this season, but she is handling it with amazing grace.

Allergies and confusion
A few days ago I mentioned we are suffering from allergies. Well I was wrong. We all just continued to get worse and I noticed on the news that there wasn't any pollen in the air, so it couldn't be allergies. We decided to take one of the kids in to the doctor and tell her we all have the same symptoms and find out what we have. I just couldn't see spending $75.......our co-pay times 5.....and find out it is just a virus and all we can do is ride it out. If it turned out to be something that needed antibiotics, then I would take them in if necessary. It turned out we have a generic virus.
We decided to take Austin and kill two birds with one stone. Austin is on Ritalin-LA and lately it hasn't been working. We don't give it to him during the summer on a regular basis but when we have lately we haven't seen any change at all in his behavior like we have in the past. So the doctor changed his medicine to Focalin XR. It is supposed to last longer than the Ritalin. The Ritalin, when it worked, lasted only 8 hours and the Focalin is supposed to last 12 hours. That will be helpful with him in school this year. We will need that medicine to last beyond school hours for homework and it will be lasting through his after school activities (Boy Scouts and baseball).
Now for the confusion part.......Yesterday Sean found and ate two donut holes, which of course contain eggs and wheat! So I braced myself for a reaction and it never happened! I am so confused as to how he can eat that and nothing happened and yet only a week ago he reacted to the wheat in something he ate for supper. I know kids can outgrow food allergies, but that fast?!? Don't get me wrong, I am NOT complaining, just confused. He goes to the allergist on September 10th for an in office trial with eggs. I will talk to her about that when we are there.

Matthew's new look
Today Matthew lost his third tooth. He is such a funny child. He cries everytime he loses a tooth. If it were up to him he would never lose any teeth. This time he is upset because now everyone will see his missing tooth when he talks or smiles. It took some convincing to let me take his picture, so here is a picture of him:

It is official.....and other ramblings
Today all four kids are registered for school and school starts in 13 days! Such a strange and exciting feeling all rolled together. It is so strange to think that during this time of year for the past 8 years I have already started school with the kids. This year I am following someone else's rules and lists.
We are going to be so busy this year. (Not that we haven't in the past, but it will be different with the kids in school.) Hannah is in cheerleading, Austin is going to play fall ball (baseball) and is still in Boy Scouts, Rebeckah is still toying with the idea of playing volleyball at school. We keep encouraging her to give it a try, but we aren't going to force her to play. Matthew isn't interested in any sports, but is still in Cub Scouts. So I am kind of anxious about how it is all going to play out. I want to set up a schedule of sorts, but I can't do that until I know when Austin will be having practice and IF Rebeckah plays volleyball I don't know her practice schedule either. I will feel better once I can set up a schedule and routine for us to follow to keep the chaos to a minimum.
We are all suffering from allergies right now. It is just miserable. We are all sneezing like crazy, our throats hurt and our heads hurt. The news keeps saying that the ragweed is going to be awful this year. UGH! I am VERY allergic to ragweed. Poor Hannah and Austin....I don't think I will be able to attend many of their games if the ragweed is as bad as they predict.
Well I think I am going to go to sleep soon. I have to adjust our schedules so we can cope with the new schedule during the school year. We have not had much of a schedule this summer so it is going to be hard to change.

Sunday lunch, meteor showers and allergies
Yesterday our neighbors (Lisa and Kevin) took us out to lunch to celebrate that after a year on the market they finally sold their house. (Not the house they are living in now....they are renting that house.) They took us to County Line BBQ. You can see their delicious food at http://www.countyline.com/. It was SO good. I got the brisket and it was so tender. They ordered two loaves of the homemade bread. Oh my gosh!! That is some good bread and they have honey butter to spread on the bread. Lisa and Kevin also insisted everyone order dessert even if they had to get it in a to go box. We ate so much we weren't even hungry at supper time, so we ate our leftovers for lunch today.
We didn't take Sean with us to lunch because I emailed the restaurant and explained Sean's allergies and asked what they had on the menu that was safe for him. They basically told me there isn't anything for him to eat there that would be safe. So we packed him a lunch in his brand new "Cars" lunch box (he is so proud to have a lunch box) and he went home with some friends of ours after church and had lunch with them. It was so nice to not have to deal with a 2 year old at a restaurant and actually enjoy the meal. It did feel strange to be without him too.
At midnight just as Chris and I were headed out to the backyard to see if we could see any meteors, Rebeckah came out to tell us she can't sleep. So she went outside with us. Chris was very impatient and went in not too long after we got out there. Rebeckah and I stayed outside and laid on the trampoline and watched the stars. Rebeckah looked away for a second and missed an awesome one. It was so bright and directly overhead. We stayed out there trying to see more. After a thousand mosquito bites later we finally saw two more. It was funny because we pointed to both of them at the same time and said in unison "There's one!"
Today we are sitting around not feeling so well. I am hoping it is just allergies. We (three out of the five and me) are sneezing and our heads and throats hurt. We got slushes from Sonic and we are just sitting around watching movies and t.v. today. Thankfully today is one of the two days this month we don't have a single thing scheduled to do....not even cheerleading!

We got slushes from Sonic and we are just sitting around watching movies and t.v. today. Thankfully today is one of the two days this month we don't have a single thing scheduled to do....not even cheerleading!

I am so mad at myself!!
Here it is 2:30 in the morning and I am up with a cranky, yucky feeling toddler all because I am an idiot! I fed Sean something with wheat in it for supper tonight and now we are suffering the consequences of that error. (FYI for those who don't know....Sean is allergic to wheat, eggs and apples.) He woke up screaming at 1:00 in the morning. Rebeckah was the first to hear him and so she came and got me to tell me she couldn't calm him down. As soon as I walked down the hall I smelled that familiar smell. :-( My poor baby's bottom was all blistered.
I feel just awful that I let this happen. We had sweet and sour chicken for supper (which of course has wheat in it), so when we have meals like that I make Sean a separate supper. I was in such a hurry tonight I grabbed a frozen dinner Chris had brought home for Sean the other day. I should have reread the ingredients like I usually do. Two pairs of eyes are better than one! I have made the mistake of misreading labels before and I have learned to read and reread and have someone else read the label too, but I didn't tonight. I am so mad at myself right now. As I got Sean all cleaned up and calmed down I had Rebeckah dig the box out of the trash and I read the ingredients to see if my suspicions were correct. They were!
Now Sean is wide awake. Rebeckah is too, so we are watching "The Devil Wears Prada" right now as we wait for Sean to go back to sleep. It is going to be a long day tomorrow. Thankfully all I have to do tomorrow is return the library books and get Hannah to cheer leading. Well I was supposed to go grocery shopping, but I think I will put that off until Friday. I think we will just have tacos for supper tomorrow. I know how to make those safe for Sean and he loves refried beans.
Well I am rambling, so I will just stop here. I sure hope he goes back to sleep soon!

What a difference a day makes!!
Yesterday was the first day we could register Hannah and Matthew in school. There are three elementary campuses in our district and they had all three register at one campus. I don't really have a problem with that idea.....of course I wish they had picked the campus that was in the middle of the three, or better yet the one our kids where our kids will be going! But that is neither here nor there. What got me so upset was that it was SO disorganized! We waited in a long line to have their shot records checked and then after we were approved we were told to "Proceed!" Proceed to WHERE?!? We moved forward to the obvious next step, the cafeteria. There were tables lined up together with signs in front of them indicating which school was where. The only problem was there were tables lined up in front of those tables, so the lines to the schools didn't go OUT from the tables, but along side of the tables! So the signs were worthless since we couldn't read where we were supposed to be. For a while we were in the wrong line because everyone around us were just as lost as we were! We were there for over an HOUR and all we got accomplished was; approval of their shot records, copies made of their shot records and birth certificates and such, got all of the forms filled out and stood forever in line to turn in the forms. At that point we ran out of time and had to leave to get Hannah to cheerleading practice and Austin to Boy Scouts.
Today was a whole different story! We got there and there was hardly anyone there (granted we were earlier than we were yesterday) and since we had our forms already filled out, we went straight to the "turn in the forms" line. Only there wasn't any line yet. They had also rearranged the set up to make more sense and you could clearly see where you were to be and the lines went AWAY from the tables instead of along side of the tables. It took us all of 10 minutes to walk from the car, turn in the papers, ask a few questions and leave!
On the 21st they will have posted outside of the school who their teachers will be and on the 23rd we will get to meet the teachers and drop off their school supplies. We enrolled Hannah in fourth grade even though according to her birth date she should be going into third grade. We did that because this past school year she did third grade. They said the counselor will be contacting us to see about testing Hannah to make sure she will do well in fourth grade. Hannah wants to go into third, but Chris and I feel it will be a waste for her to do that, so unless the school says she would do better in third, she will be in fourth. Right now Matthew is doing flash cards with Hannah to refresh her memory on her mulitplication and division facts. She isn't enjoying it, but she will get her turn at quizzing Matthew on his addition and subtraction facts.
On the 14th we get to register the older two. I am sure it will be easier than it was for the younger two. There will be far fewer kids registering because it is a much smaller school. I can only hope, right?
I can't believe that in less than three weeks they will all be at school. I am excited for them (and I can't lie....for me too), but at the same time it is a bit sad and strange for me. Usually at this point in the year we are either already doing school or I am in the process of organizing their books and planning out lessons. Big changes are ahead of us! I am sure I will have plenty to write about as the year goes on. We will be experiencing a lot of firsts!

Our weekend
We were on the go all weekend. Saturday we took Rebeckah to her friend's house, then I dropped Chris and the boys off at the shooting range so they could shoot some guns. Then I took Hannah and Sean shopping. Later that evening we went to a birthday party at the local park and pool. (I put a few pictures below.)
Sunday after church we went to a skating party with the Cub Scouts. None of the kids really know how to skate. They gave it a few tries and then just hung out and chatted with friends. After the party a family in the Cub Scout pack came over and played the Wii and visited. The kids had a great time.

cheerleading pics, rain and filming
Today I remembered to bring my camera for Hannah's cheerleading practice, but I only got a few pictures before it started to rain AGAIN! They aren't the best pictures, but they are the best I could do today.
I took this picture just to show how hard it was raining. I tried to take one of Hannah (we were in the truck) but she kept getting in places where I couldn't see her. We moved the truck but as soon as we pulled into the new place she was running towards the truck because her coach let them go, but the football players had to keep practicing, so I took one of them. When Chris dropped Hannah off at practice he noticed a film crew at the middle school football field. We were going to go by on our way back to watch her practice and see what was going on, but we forgot to go before. We went after her practice in all of the rain to see if we could find out what they were filming. They have filmed a few movies and music videos here in our town before. We took a few pictures, but couldn't ask anyone because the rain was coming down too hard. When the rain slowed down we found someone in the extras parking lot and we asked her. She said they are filming a Wal-Mart commercial. We found that to be too funny since we don't even have a Wal-Mart here in town. We have to drive at least 30 minutes before we get to one! So if you see a Wal-Mart commercial with football players and cheerleaders in purple that was our little town! Here are a few pictures: (they aren't that great since it was raining)
I just looked up the filming and it says the commercial will begin airing September 3rd. It also said that Wal-Mart donated $10,000 to the football team, cheerleading squad and band.

We finally got an answer!
I called the school this afternoon to see if they have finished going through the transfers and if Rebeckah and Austin will be going to school there this year. They will!! So we will register them on the 14th and the other two will register at their school next week. I feel so relieved now that we finally got an answer. Now I can move forward with getting things ready for school. The only problem is that both schools will be having their open house/meet the teacher thing on the same day at the same time. So we will have to divide and conquer. Only problem remains is who goes with who. It is so hard since it is Hannah and Austin's first time at school, so we both want to be there with them.
Once again I didn't get pictures of Hannah at cheer practice. I have a very good excuse though......she didn't go. She fell and hurt her knee right before practice. It isn't anything serious, but enough to need to rest it. Plus it was raining AGAIN! They don't call off practice unless there is thunder and lightening. I really didn't want to go out in the rain, so it all worked out in the end.
Well that is all I have right now. I need to get Seanie to bed. I just wanted to say the kids are going to the school we wanted them to go to!! :-)

Summer is winding down
The daily raining has finally stopped and it is finally beginning to feel like summer. The trouble is we are starting to get so busy we hardly have time to hang out in the pool like we would all like to do.
Pop Warner cheerleading has begun again and so Hannah is busy with practices and learning her cheers. Soon our weekends will be filled with watching her cheer at football games. Last year they didn't go to competition, but this year they are going to compete. I have been meaning to take the camera to practice to take some pictures, but I keep forgetting. One day i will remember and I will post some pictures here.
Rebeckah started volleyball camp this week too. She is considering playing volleyball at school this year, so she decided to go camp to help her decide. One second she says she doesn't like volleyball and will not be playing in school, but then she turns around and acts like she loves it. I think she is just afraid to try something new. She is also still upset about us changing schools on her and so she is refusing to participate in anything that has to do with her new school. (Well if she goes there.....we still haven't got any official answer, but they said in a couple of days we should know for sure.)
In between all of this we are trying to get ready for school. Our first year to send all of the kids to school. We need to gather up all of the required paperwork to register Hannah and Matthew at their school. Registration begins next week. Then we have registration for Rebeckah and Austin. I have no clue when that takes place. We still need to finish getting school supplies, get the boys hair cuts and fix Austin's glasses (they are bent out of shape and sit crooked on his face). We are also fitting in a visit with my parents in between all of this!
I have no idea what date it will say this blog was done because I started it yesterday (August 1st), but I got interuppted and didn't get to finish it until this morning (August 2nd). But either way, it is August 2nd and almost time for me to pick up Rebeckah from volleyball camp.
